Detox from CANDIDIASIS (Yeast)

Hello once again~

The Serenity Weight Loss and Detoxification Program actually started in response to the author's personal challenges with yeast, over 30 years ago. With one vaginal yeast infection after the other, severe constipation, severe menstrual cramps, bloated tummy, especially at the end of the day, when it may have swollen to the size of a basketball! Not cool, on an otherwise petite frame. Tip: I also had one dental infection after the other,   that was treated with one round of antibiotic after the other. Hmmmm...that should be a clue for you, as we begin to unravel my personal journey.

My quest to discover  the cause to my kooky medical challenges led me to an exhaustive study on what  YEAST is exactly and how one rids the body of it permanently. We are talking about YEAST overgrowth; we do not  intend to imply that your gut will be yeast-free, ever!

Important note: I know this is contrary to much of the information out there in TV land, but for the past 30 years that I have studied yeast overgrowth and applied the information and  training into my clinical  work, which later formed the foundation of my nutritional program. However, in my journey   I discovered that I hold several differences of opinion that are worth noting upfront:

As a PALEO expert and a naturalist I do not support the following:

1. Vinegar- it rids the body of yeasty symptoms but it not address the  cause; in fact in my experience it is like pouring kerosene on a fire and  actually causes yeast candida to flare up.

Sorry to  all those who thought differently, including the BRAGG'S Vinegar detox devotees. Why not err on the side of caution? Do you really  NEED Vinegar, Sauerkraut and pickles anyway?
Only a man would invent vinegar to rid the body of yeast; typically seen as  female predominate problem . Yes, I went there.  lol However, THIS IS NOT A FEMALE ONLY PROBLEM

2. I am therefore anti fermented veggies to rid the body of Candida, unless fermented with salt

3. I believe you should eliminate ALL diary, so yes, that include the probiotc rich yogurts

4. I like the use of KOMBUCHA for stubborn digestive problems, HOWEVER, I would like to see you consult a coach beforehand. KOMBUCHA is made by starting with a bacteria "filter" sort of speak,  called "SCOBY". Sugar and yeast is used, (plus Black or Green tea-no problem there) resulting in a vinegar by-product. As you might imagine, one could question the use of KOMBUCHA in an anti-yeast program.

Why  does it clearly work for some? Perhaps it works like a vaccine or as homeopathy. If you give the body the problem, it eliminates the problem. I am not use. My theory has not been tested. Nevertheless, I am including KOMBUCHA on this blog post  and we have taught on the use of KOMBUCHA in the Serenity Program . We will continue to do so; it is one of the most fascinating and intriguing products on the market.

OK...., let's get started on my program

When our immune systems are functioning well, the infection is rarely a problem but occasionally when our immune system lets us down, the infection can spread to other areas of our body including to the brain and heart membranes or into the bloodstream.
It is estimated that around a third of the healthy population carry the candida fungus in their body and it is generally considered to be part of the normal bodily microflora. However, many  experts in holistic medicine believe that the majority of us have  an overgrowth of yeast  fungus. Left untreated it then  becomes  the root cause of  many medical challenges.

CAUSES OF CANDIDA OVERGROWTH

There are a variety of possible reasons why you might become infected by candida including the following:
  • Diets which are high in refined sugar or over-consumption of alcohol.
  • Certain antibiotics which not only destroy the bad bacteria but also kill the body’s friendly bacteria which may act to keep the candida yeast under control. The overuse of certain antibiotics is believed to be largely responsible for the significant rise in the incidence of candida.
  • Cancer treatment
  • The use of oral corticosteroids
  • Birth control pills
  • Having diabetes
  • A compromised immune system
Symptoms
It is not always easy for a doctor to make a precise diagnosis of candida or candida overgrowth because the infection affects different people in different ways. However we know that those suffering from a candida infection might experience one or more of the following symptoms.
  • Chronic levels of fatigue which may last many months
  • Mood disorders
  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Sinus infection
  • Oral thrush
  • Poor concentration levels
  • Fungal infection of the skin and nail
  • A hormonal imbalance
  • Digestive complaints such as bloating or pain

WHY PROBIOTICS CAN HELP

The precise role that candida plays in our body is uncertain; it may ordinarily benefit its host in some way or it may actually be a pathogen which is usually kept under control by the body’s friendly bacteria. The latter explanation seems likely because up to now, scientists have found no benefits to candida.
Despite the fact that a third of the population carries the virus, the risk of infection is relatively low because the candida fungus makes up a very small percentage of the overall proportion of bodily microflora.
Despite this low risk, the incidence of infection caused by candida is on the rise especially among patients at hospital or care facilities. The majority of infections are caused by candida Albicans but other species of candida such as candida parapsilosis and candida glabrata may also be responsible and are pathogenic to humans.
The increase in the incidence of candida infection is thought to be down to an increased use of broad spectrum antibiotics which disturb the balance of the body’s natural microflora. A variety of in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that gut microflora reduces candida count and that antibiotic use significantly raises the risk of candida infections.
Antibiotics act to destroy or inhibit bacterial growth but they leave fungus undisturbed. This creates an imbalance in the gut microflora and gives candida the opportunity to increase its numbers significantly.

Consult a coach  for good brand recommendations

How to choose the best probiotic
1.  Beware of drug store brands
2. Beware of Vitamin chain store brands, such as GNC or Vitamin Shoppe . Chain stores are just that; they are not speciality stores and they do not manuafacture. They are using the size of their company to market under their name the brand of a lesser known manufacturer. Thus, most often   you will not  have a clue who the manfacturer really is
Further, with the market being flooded with so many types of probiotic, how do you make an informed choice before you purchase? There are actually a number of factors to consider:

  • How many bacteria are in each capsule?
The number of bacteria in each probiotic capsule varies from a few billion to 100 billion or more. As a general rule, the greater the number of bacteria the better, but when beginning your probiotic treatment experts advise that you go for a lower number. Once you are happy that they are not causing any adverse reactions, you can happily increase your dosage.

  • Which bacterial strains are contained?
    There is a great deal of variety between not only the number of bacteria but also the strains contained in each capsule on the market. Some of the most popular and beneficial strains with regard to candida include;
-Lactobacillus Acidophilus which research has demonstrated can limit candida overgrowth and boost the immune system.
-Bifidobacteria Bifidum which is another popular strain used in commercial probiotics. It helps boost the immune system, aids digestion and the synthesis of certain vitamins.
-L. rhamnosus and L. reuteri have also demonstrated the ability to fight candida in clinical trials.
How many bacterial strains per capsule or dose?
Some probiotics contain an individual strain while others can contain 10 or more strains in each capsule. Some experts are of the opinion that probiotics with a greater variety of bacterial strains are more helpful in treating candida than those containing a single strain.
However so long as your probiotic has several of the more important strains such as B.Bifidum and L. Acidophilus you should be good to go.

• Should I take them in capsule or powder form?
While probiotics are available in several supplementary forms, it is best to purchase the capsules as opposed to powder. The reason for that is that the probiotics need to find their way into the gut before being destroyed along the way.

• Probiotic foods, BUT proceed with caution.  Why, you might ask? These foods, while made with "natural" ingredients are man made products. Similarly, TOFU, used in vegetarian cuisine is man-made as well.  Man-made products are NOT  PALEO. Typically, if man is required  to make it, other than the processing required to manufacture vitamins or harvest minerals,  it should be avoided. You are straying from natures path .
Nevertheless,  probiotics  can be found in a variety of readily available foods. Food that is rich in these friendly bacteria include yogurt especially yogurt made from goat’s milk which often contains lactobacillus and acidophilus.
Fermented foods such as  sauerkraut and kefir are other rich sources of healthy bacteria. Other food which contain probiotics are miso soup, fermented soybean products, tempeh, kimchi and kombucha.
