Brassicas (aka Cruciferous Vegetables) – The Queen Anne Diet

Are you experiencing fatigue, irritability, weight gain/loss, and hair loss? You may be suffering from an iodine deficiency. This is also known as hypothyroidism, an under active thyroid is a condition when the butterfly-shaped gland does not produce enough T3 and T4 hormones.
Do you think there is the perfect diet for an under active thyroid?
To enable us to dig deeper into the right diet for hypothyroidism, you need to understand what an under active thyroid means for your body's functioning.

Is it normal to have an under-active thyroid? Yes
It would be highly unlikely for an overweight person to have a normal functioning thyroid gland. This is because the excess weight stresses the thyroid gland and slows it down and reduces it’s ability to function. However, this does not mean all slender people have a normal thyroid

It means that it is NOT absorbing the iodine from the blood or that there is simply NOT enough iron to absorb.

You might also be surprised to know just how much the thyroid gland controls a majority of the body's functions.

It produces hormones that spread out to different receptors in the body that control the functions of

  • metabolism
  • heart
  • mood
  • temperature

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is a condition in which thyroid gland does not produce the adequate amount of hormone. Iodine is to the thyroid gland like gas is to an automobile. Without sufficient hormones from the thyroid, the pituitary gland responds by producing more Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) so that more hormone is produced out of the thyroid gland.

TSH causes the thyroid gland to produce triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These two hormones play a role in the body's metabolism and are required for the normal growth of the brain. It follows then, that it could be that Alzheimer's has at its root, at least in part a poorly functioning thyroid gland.

If all of the above is true, then why is the CABBAGE SOUP DIET so popular? Because cabbage and all cruciferous veggies are also:
  1. Anti-inflammatory
  2. Anti-oxidants
  3. Anti-estrogenic - estrogen blockers. The sole purpose of estrogen is to make fat and increasing the linings of the body related to delivering a baby. This is why estrogen reduction results in thinning of the uterine walls. However, one should NOT add estrogen in it’s pure form, frequently done by GYN doctor. Progesterone is the hormone that should be added, which the body then converts to estrogen as needed.
Thus, short bursts of cabbage intensive eating along with:
  • PROTEIN, which is nature’s fat burner,
  • Supplemental intake of vitamins and minerals, which is the root cause of a all thyroid disorders. *
  • Removal of all forms of sugar, because sugar literally fries the thyroid gland, taking it on a roller-coaster ride, from the highs and lows from the sugar hits.
As a coach and prior retail health food store owner, I partnered with and recommend these exclusively. You must take your core vitamins and minerals in liquid form, for proper absorption

It is counter-intuitive, if NOT hypocritical to avoid cruciferous veggies due to a concern about thyroid function, while continuing consumption of wine, all form of sugar, such as ice cream and candy and excessive amounts of fruit.
However, when cabbage is used in a metabolism boosting program that is managed in the way described above, one receives the anti-inflammatory, anti estrogenic, and anti-oxidant benefits of the cabbage, while side-stepping the down side of the cruciferous family. Because blood sugar goes kooky, due to the low intake of complex carbs and the natural blood sugar lowering effect of cabbage, I also recommend that one control blood sugar with the guidance of a coach. I use a blood sugar stabilizing tea, such as our own recipe for a Ginger and Bitter Melon Tea.
The bottom line: the CABBAGE SOUP DIET is not wrong, it is however INCOMPLETE in it’s haste to promise people yet another quick weight loss scheme. However, yes, if done properly, you will boost your metabolism and jump start your weight loss, because you are leveraging it’s benefits.
